CHAPTER TWENTY-FOUR

A Few Days Later

“Alpha formation!” Zach shouted as he took a few steps backward.

Al rushed forward and took his place, bones covering his chest. Zach fell into formation just behind Al, twin swords drawn. Kezdet and Thao were side by side in the back of the formation. Thao had her hands in the side pockets of her large bag and Kezdet was gathering essence around his staff.

A rock flew forward and crashed into Al. He absorbed the blow and bent low in order to allow Zach to leap over him. Leaping into the air, Zach slashed downward with his dual swords. Thao tossed a potion at Al with one hand and another, past Zach, with her other. Kezdet was the last to act, sending a black lightning bolt across the field from his staff.

All of their attacks landed with outstanding success. They looked excitedly at one another before turning to face Mark, smiles beaming across their faces.

“So? How was that?” Zach asked.

Mark grunted. “You were a bit slow to react and,” he walked over and gestured at the three motionless rock pillars the group were attacking, “your enemies weren’t exactly the toughest out there. You’ll have to test the formation in actual combat to see how effective it is.”

“Come on, Mark, we did well,” Thao argued.

“It's a solid foundation for a striker formation but don’t pat yourselves on the back just yet.” The group deflated. “How would you use that formation defensively? What about fighting a boss monster or laying an ambush on someone? You need to think out all the possible scenarios and how to combat them.”

“Can we really prepare for every ssscenario?” questioned Kezdet.

“You never know what’s going to be thrown at you but if you prepare solid formations for the basics, you can adapt them to meet your needs. Take your alpha formation, for example. The enemies were striking you all from the front so things worked out well, but you could adapt that formation to fit something like an ambush. Instead of Al waiting to absorb the first blow, he could rush forward with Zach, and they could easily dispatch the first enemy together. You need to remain fluid with your formations.” Mark took a swig from his large mug of ale. “This will all come with practice and time. You can’t expect to become experts overnight.”

“We have to.” All eyes turned to face Zach. “We have to become experts overnight because we don’t have time.” He gazed about the others. “The enemy’s coming, and we need to be ready. I think we should double up our training and spend more time gathering essence to rank up.”

His entire party looked at him wearingly, but it was Thao who broke the silence. “Don’t you think we’re training enough already, Zach? I’m not sure we can train much more than we are. Our bodies need some rest.”

“The lass is right. You can’t just train all day and night. You need to let your muscles rest, and your mind too,” Mark added.
